VOLGOGRAD TODAY
Volgograd today is a
modern city with a population of 1 million. The Volga-Don Canal makes the
city a big river port connecting five seas: the Caspian, Baltic , White,
Black and the Sea of Azov .
It remains a very long and narrow city of about 80 km along the Volga River.
The territory of the Volgograd administrative region/oblast/ is almost as
big as France. The climate is continental which makes the city hot in summer
and rather cold in winter.
The city centre is a
concentration of theatres, museums, hotels , shopping centres, and colleges.
Volgograd is a big industrial and traffic centre with its own train stations
and airport.
The city was founded in 1589 as a Cossack fortress on the Tsaritsa river (a
tributary joining the Volga in the city centre) . In 1925 the city was
renamed Stalingrad after Joseph Stalin. The city became known worldwide
because of the battle of 1942/43 . Here, with the enormous efforts of the Red Army,
fascist troops were finally forced to retreat and the road to Berlin began.
The story of
Stalingrad is very controversial and has been interpreted in many ways for
political reasons.
